Unforseen adventures ...

It is a good thing that we like adventures and can roll with comes our way :).  Today was one of those days.  I had read about these amazing caves, Casas Viejas's which date back to the Neolithic Age, more than 7,000 years ago!  They supposedly have cave drawings up in these caves.  Well, after a beautiful drive through a national park, where we got to see fallow deer and some red deer and lots of grazing bulls and horses we ended up at the cave entarence blocked by a grumpy old man.  With our very limited Spanish Jake figured out that the caves have been closed for more than 5 years!  We had just looked on the cities website the day before looking for them and they had said they were a NO miss attraction.  Apparently not!  So we drove up to the city of Benalup and found the tourist office and the girl there spoke pretty broken English, but we managed to find out that the caves were closed because of the safety of the ladder.  It was quite ironic because that is what Jake is here doing for work, making sure that ladders and the buildings on the Navy base are safe to go up and down and not fall off of.  Not exactly the adventure we had in mind.  Plan B to the rescue.  When we were driving to Benalup, we passed the city of Medina Sodina so we decided to go up to this city on the hill and enjoy another Spanish City.    It was beautiful.  It has claims to Phoenician, Roman, Visigoth and Moorish roots so it was interesting to see what was left of each era. We found this fun little arch way that reminded us so much of our time in Bahrain, certainly from the Moorish influence. Medina is actually quite famous for their pastries as well.  They are considered the pastry/cake capital of the provice of Cadiz.  We got some local pastries from a shop that has been around since 1852!  You can tell why as their stuff is pretty amazing too!  We got some treats including the  treat they are most known for.  The alfajor which is the recipe is reportedly handed down from generations to generations.

All in all it ended up to be a nice day to get out and see more of Southern Spain!
