We headed downtown Catania again to see one of the castles down there. The kids needed to get some energy out and we had just enough time to get down there, see the castle and get home before dinner.
It was a cool looking castle from the outside, but once we got inside to what they call the museum it was kind of a disappointment. We were hoping for more castle stuff, armor, weapons, that type of stuff but there were just remains of theaters, statues, little vases, lots of Roman stuff. It was still cool to see, just not what we expected. The upstairs of the castle had a bunch of paintings in it. That part was pretty cool, but the kids were bored by that point so we didn't get to study them more. It was interesting to see some of the pictures depict Jesus' birth and life and some of the miracles in the bible. There are truly talented people in this world.
The castle was one of the only structures that lasted through the earthquakes and great lava eruption in 1693, although it made it so that it was no longer on the coast, it is now about a mile inland. It did have a moat but most of that was filled in by lava too, but there is still enough left to seem as if there was a moat.
